Awesome wooden truck! January 19, 2008 K. M. Dresher (Orange County, CA United States) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
My son (3 1/2) really wanted a tow truck from Santa. I am so happy that Santa knows Melissa and Doug! He was thrilled when he opened his trucks. (He was so good, he got two.) The tow truck comes in a wooden box in a bunch pieces. It does take a little while to put it together but my son loved helping me find the pieces I needed next. A great lesson in patience. When we were done it looked awesome. I had no trouble getting all together. Though, I do recommend a cordless screwdriver. There are a lot of screws! And my weak hands had trouble with a few of the parts. (Dad, on the other hand, was fine.) All in all, this is a great toy. He plays with it forever and tows just about anything with wheels behind it. The tow rig is not attached to the body of the truck so you do need to attempt to keep the two parts in the same place. :) I plan to purchase this same toy (and the trash truck) for my nephew's birthday. It is durable, cute and super fun.
A Melissa & Doug Disappointment January 7, 2008 Brian Hendricks (Oswego, IL) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
After watching my son's eyes light up with other toys made by Melissa & Doug, and giving children in our extended family gifts with the same brand name, I was excited for my son and I to have this opportunity to build something together, and with a screwdriver only! For me, not so handy with tools, this was great news. My son is only four, but he was able to help me with finding the right parts to be put together in each step. But the joy in opening up the package and laying out the parts quickly turned me into a foul mood. The good: The directions were impeccable. They were easy to follow with clear pictures. There was never a doubt, even in my son's mind, what part was to go where. The bad: Assembly was a near disaster. This was due to two factors. 1) The screw holes were improperly drilled. Some were off a small amount, others were too close together, and still others were not deep enough. Only a screwdriver required for assembly? Perhaps a power screwdriver, to get the screw deep enough. 2) Parts were too large. The main parts that were too large were the dowels for the axles for the tires and the dowel for the pulley wheel, which operates the tow rope. The tow assembly's dowel is so far off, it's pointless to even try to use the pulley system. The knobs attached on either end are (when the dowel is centered) about 1/4" away from the truck, on each side. Without that solid fit, all you are doing is turning empty air. It's useless. So, the end result is a wobbly truck with a useless tow assembly and a front section that is so cock-eyed it appears the truck has been bumped by a larger toy. 100 times. To wrap up this review, don't buy this toy thinking your 6-9 year old boy or girl could put it together. They will need help. But don't be surprised if you end up with the most disappointing gift of the year.
