5 out of 5 stars Great - it has just about replaced my car for short run errands   December 1, 2008
T. Boland (Southern California)
I purchased this bag and the Topeak Explorer Bike Rack from Amazon about a month ago. Since purchasing the combo, I have used my car only three times since to go shopping around town - including groceries. For instance, a carton for a dozen eggs fits perfectly inside the main compartment. Haven't lost one yet!

The fold-up panniers are great and easy to use and put back into their pocket. The slide-mount of the bag is fantastic. I can take the bag off and on in a snap and take it into work or the store.

You will need another rear-facing passive red reflector for your bike - I mounted mine on the Explorer rack mount. The reflector behind your seat will be blocked.

I also took the advice of a previous reviewer who mentioned lubing the mounting bolts when attaching the rack to an aluminum frame. Great tip (not mine) that prevents stripping the bolt holes on the frame. Steel bolt vs Al holes means that the bolts would win in a fight.

The only downside so far is that of the additional weight. I don't notice it while riding; only while picking up and manipulating the bike by hand. I have a very light bike and it throws the balance off to the rear. No big deal while riding at all. Once you remove the bag, the rack does not seem to have as much as an effect.

This combo is WELL worth the extra weight. If you are going to fill this bag with stuff, the weight of the bag is not an issue anyway. If you aren't going to fill it with stuff, what's the point?

The trips I used the car:
One was picking up a big down comforter from the dry cleaners. I actually dropped it off on the bike.
The second was picking up the frozen T'giving turkey and fixings.
The third involved stopping at the LBS (Local Bike Shop) to get a bike rack. Had to make sure it fit correctly. Better to do that with the car.

4 out of 5 stars Nice bag.   October 26, 2008

Nice bag but much smaller than pictured. I love the rail on the beam action that makes this go well with this bag.

5 out of 5 stars So Far, So Good   October 14, 2008
Shannon A. Paugh (Binghamton, NY)
I am a newer cyclist, and had been looking for a rack/pannier combination that would allow me to run local errands by bike. My local bike shop suggested that I consider a trunk bag and recommended the Topeak products. I bought the Explorer rack, but they didn't have a roomy enough Topeak bag at the LBS. I found this one on Amazon and I'm glad I did.

It has the best of everything -- the bag itself is very roomy, with room to expand at the top, and has fold down panniers on the sides. I haven't used the panniers yet because the bag is so roomy. It easily holds a jacket, snacks, repair kit, first aid kit, all the things I need when I take my kids on rides. If it slows me down, I'm not aware of it. I don't feel the extra weight at all.

So far I couldn't be happier with my purchases.

4 out of 5 stars Trunk Bag   October 5, 2008
Jeffrey C. Roth
Excellently built and designed. Plenty of compartments and the main compartment is expandable. Will even hold an extra water bottle in vertical position.
Since it's made for its own rack system it was necessary to use a strip of sticky backed, non skid carpet foam between my regular rack and this bag to hold it securely in place. This is an easy fix.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Bike Bag!   September 14, 2008
Heber Bennion (Salt Lake City, Utah United States)
My wife and I shared this one bag on a 50-mile ride in threatening weather, so we packed light rain jackets, pile jackets, long sport pants, gloves, our lunch, first aid kit, and a couple extra water bottles in it.
I was surprised that it all easily fit.
The back was stable and tight enough that it was easy to forget it was there.
The main compartment and panniers are very easily accessible. I love the way you can easily slide it on and off (if you have the compatible Topeak rack).
The only thing I can think of that I would change is to add a small outside pocket for cell phone, wallet, sunscreen, etc. I used the thin top compartment for this, and it worked OK, but wasn't as easily accessible as I would have liked.
Great deal at Amazon, and with free shipping it arrived in two days.
