I was never much on board games since Risk and then a friend invites me over to play this. As we sat over looking the beautiful Tucson valley I began to notice the valley less as I feel under the sway of this very interesting board game. After you put the board together and place numbers on, "hexs" you roll dice and depending on the number you can build or god forbid you roll a 7. No luck for 7's. You build roads and settlements, cities come later and suddenly your friend who has invited you to play, has blocked your numbers with this bandit and your stuck. Winning sometimes comes surprisingly quickly usually for my friend and while she gloats at you, dances around the table shouting, "I WON, I WON". You can look out over the valley and marvel at a beautiful sun set because it might just be the only solace you have for the day....unless you win.

I absolutely love settlers, and my wife and I play with friends about once or twice a week. We only had the basic game for a long time, but we finally bit the bullet and bought seafarers, and are so glad that we did. Seafarers adds boats (which tend to make sheep more valuable as opposed to practically worthless in the basic game). We love having more variety of games, and play all the scenarios. Buy it, having more things to explore is a great deal of fun.
