What We Think

Fun Factor:

Durability:

(what this means)

The Good: Building system offers infinite possibilities for construction fun

The Bad: Small metal balls can roll away and get lost

In a Nutshell: The MagNext system inspires hours of imaginative play

Ages: 6 and up
Ready for Action
Just open the convenient case, take the pieces out of their plastic holders, and you and your child are ready for the fun to begin. A single page of illustrated instructions offers some construction suggestions and shows how to use the mX logo to figure out the polarity of magnetic connectors.

The carrying case converts to a platform for construction that can be arranged in several ways, allowing inventions to hang in the air or climb up and down a slanted platform. Several compartments help keep small parts from getting lost when the set is not in use.

Colorful, Easy-to-Combine Pieces
Plastic pieces in red, blue, orange, lime green, and gray combine with shiny silver balls to make bold, colorful creations. A mixture of square and triangular base pieces increases the geometric possibilities of this system, while special pieces that snap into the middle of those base pieces allow the addition of interesting features. Translucent faces can be snapped on for a smooth look, and snap-in connectors that spin or hinge add movement to favorite creations.

We found that the pieces were durable and easy to handle. Both assembly and deconstruction came naturally, making it easy to begin new projects.

Encourage Creativity
Innovation and creative thinking come naturally to children, and building toys stimulate their desire to create new things and explore the world around them. With the MagNext system, kids can choose between recreating the things they see each day, like houses and vehicles, and inventing entirely new machines.

MagNext also offers a hands-on way to explore geometry and magnetism. The only downside we found with this building system was that metal balls occasionally escaped off of smooth tables or across hardwood floors. Playing on carpet or being careful to store the balls in the carrying case when they weren't in use quickly solved this problem.

Since there are plenty of pieces for simultaneous construction projects, this set is perfect for cooperative play or a single child with a huge imagination. It can be combined with other MagNext systems, increasing building possibilities and adding to the fun.

What's in the Box

4 out of 5 stars Hours of fun   January 6, 2009
L. Black (Louisville, TN)
We bought this toy for our 4 1/2 year old son for Christmas. He loves it and he and Daddy have already had many hours of fun building things with it. I think it helps him with coordination and problem solving skills because he can build ANYTHING he can imagine. He really is enjoying it. The only concern is there are lots of small pieces and I seem to find them all over my living room.

4 out of 5 stars Good Deal in toys   January 6, 2009
Good strong magnets. Better than I expected. Stong enough to build fairly large projects in geometric shapes. My children have played with for over 1 hour plus at a time with this set.

5 out of 5 stars hours of fun   January 4, 2009
Miss Lemon (Oregon)
I got this for my four and a half year old and he spends hours and hours playing with it. It is the first toy that has ever held his attention for more than 20-30 minutes. He played for three hours the first day without looking up!
This definitely encourages creativity, teaches about structures and reinforces knowledge of shapes.
My only complaint is the case is not very fun, and I have a hard time getting it to latch closed. Some of the pieces seem silly to me (these are pieces of clear colored plastic that snap onto the magnetic pieces to cover the holes. I don't get that. The magnetic pieces and the balls provide hours of interesting fun for both my child and me. I ended up getting a 50ish piece additional set (with no case) so we'd have more pieces to play with.
I love this toy!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and fun to play with   December 31, 2008

This toy was fun to play with and it provides a sort of educational value with the magnets and how they work.

3 out of 5 stars Not that great   December 30, 2008
book mama (NY)
My son got this toy for Christmas along with a Magnetix case, also full of magnets. This toy is hard to open without all the parts flying around, the lids meant to keep the parts in place are a bit flimsy. The magnets are pretty strong, but limited because they are all squares and triangles. I think the Magnetix brand of magnet toys is a much better value and lets a child be more creative. Having the two brands side by side, I feel the Magnetix is of better quality
