Avoid these goofy seed kits! November 11, 2008

These carnivorous plant seed kits are one of the best ways I know to disappoint a young person who wants to start growing carnivorous plants. Here's why:
1. Venus flytraps are neither a jungle or rainforest plant. This marketing is not only deceptive, but just factually wrong. If Venus flytraps are kept this way they usually die.
2. Under the best conditions, Venus flytraps take 3-5 years to reach maturity from seed. This is a difficult way for children, especially younger children, to start this hobby.
3. This type of marketing just reinforces the myth that carnivorous plants are difficult to grow.
