Pop Up Pirate! promises hours of amusement. After all, who doesn't like to see a pirate get shot out of a barrel? The game is simple. The unlucky pirate is pushed into the top of a brown plastic barrel, readying the spring mechanism for his eventual launch. Players then take turns pushing colorful plastic swords into holes on the side of the barrel, one by one until finally someone releases the spring and sends the poor little pirate on his way. Whoever makes the pirate pop loses, until the next round at any rate. The game includes a blue plastic base, the brown barrel (the sort that pirates would use for grog), and 24 plastic swords--six each of yellow, red, green, and blue. There's also lots of stickers of birds, smiling sharks, and even an ogling octopus, although they don't stay stuck very well. The pirate himself has a big black mustache and wears an eye patch and a purple plastic scarf over his head. Luckily, he doesn't seem to mind getting jounced around so much, since he also has a gigantic, if somewhat cautious, grin. --David Morel

 Inexpensive family fun, perfect for kids ages 2-4 October 5, 2008

There's not much to this game and that's the charm for young players. Each player has colored swords they stick in the barrel and one sword activates the pirate, which pops out.
This is a perfect family game for parents to play with children ages 2-4. The game is easy to understand and there's plenty of giggling when the pirate pops up. Each game lasts about five minutes, so there was plenty of time to play it multiple times before the kids grew tired. This also ensured that more than one player won.
We played with our Pop-Up Pirate for about a year before our sons grew beyond it. Now, we play Othello and chess and dominoes.

We have had this toy for about two years now. It is still a favorite. My then 2, 4, and 5 year olds loved it! Now that they are 4,6, and 7 they still love it. The swords are colored helping the littlest with their colors. It is so funny to see the expressions when the pirate pops out. It's a fast moving fun game that gets them into the habit of taking turns. I would recommend this game for preschoolers to at least 1st grade. Then the fun starts to wane as lego's take over their life.... ;)

This game is funny and my 4 year old likes to work on sticking the colored swords in. The laughs and jumps when the pirate pops up. But unless you cleverly turn the barrel, the same two slots make the pirate jump every time. The first few times we played it, it changed slots, but after about 5 times, its the same old slot that triggers the pop. But just a quick turn on the barrel, and they never know the difference. Not worth the money though, if you ask me.

This is my 3 year-old granddaughter's favorite game!!! She gets so excited when the pirate "pops" out. Of course she believes this is how you win. The only drawback is the base is comes with, which slides across any smooth surface (table)requiring players to hold the barrel while inserting the swords. Still it's an exciting game for little ones.

Bought it for my 3 year old. He knows his colors and how to take turns so no educational value beyond that. Boring, not much fun at all. Lots of small parts (swords) to find around the house...
