Frustration for a younger child. Five stars for tweens, teens and adults. February 11, 2008 J. Arena (Williamsburg, VA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Alex Granny Squares Crochet Kit in Carry Case is a very cute gift, and with diligence you could come away with a wonderful new skill. However, this is most definitely not for a young child UNLESS there is an experienced crocheter around to explain the directions, show how to hold the yarn and hook, etc. For a teen or adult, this is a great way to learn granny squares and have a fun little supply of enough colors to make some striking ones! If you get into it, you've learned a wonderful, productive hobby that will add to your wardrobe, home decor, and reputation as a gift-giver! Prepare: Yarn shops will soon become your second home!
Not as easy for a child as advertised. February 25, 2007 Heidi Swart (Redmond, WA USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this as a gift for my friend's daughter for her 9th birthday. This product is recommended for 8-12 years old, and I think it is actually intended for children 10 or above. She immediately wanted to try this product as soon as she opened it, but didn't understand the pictures or instructions very well. It was much easier for me to show her by example from how to hold the crochet needle to how to hold the yarn than it was for her to follow the instructions in the booklet. She also preferred me to show her than to try deciphering the instructions and pictures herself. However, she is a very patient girl and after 20 minutes, was able to crochet a chain, albeit awkwardly and slowly with lots of hands-on assistance. However, I think it will take a very long time and lots of practical instruction before she will be able to start doing trebles and mastering the making of the actual squares. I can see this would be frustrating and disappointing for a child who wants to learn a skill more quickly. Her mother was relieved I had had some experience as hers was limited and she said she didn't have enough patience to sit down with her daughter and try to figure it out together. I told the child that she would develop her own technique eventually. I would probably only recommend this as a gift for a child who has a lot of patience and doesn't frustrate easily, or for someone who has an experienced and patient person to help them. I rated this product a 3 as I think it would be very difficult for a child under at least the age of 10 to master by herself. However, the colors are bright and interesting and it was packaged attractively.
Alex Granny Squares Review January 12, 2007 Sr Ruth Ann Patrick I finally learned how to crochet with the Alex Granny Squares Kit...I practiced for two nights...directions and illustrations were easy to follow even for a lefty like me...with this kit I completed a hat and scarf for my grand-niece for Christmas...even had enough scraps left over to make five hackysacks for the rest of my nieces and nephews for Christmas. What's really great now that I have learned some of the basics is that I can move on to other crochet projects!
