4 out of 5 stars good way to practice spelling   October 15, 2007
Mrs. Hang Luzader (Frostburg, MD)
It's a fun way to encourage kids to practice spelling. They can put their spelling words in one (fly)paper, then play games in different (fly)papers. There are many games my daughter (about 9 years old) enjoys. They can earn "money" by playing games and get their spelling words correctly. Then they use the "money" to purchase food or other things for their "pets". My daughter can sit and "play" with it for a long time, so she can buy goodies for her pets. She learns to spell very difficult words with it, without getting intimidated.
The only thing I wish is it would give definitions to the words. It does give pronunciation, which is helpful. But there are no synonyms given to each word. I try to ask my daughter the meaning of some words, but the game has fast pace and she hates to lose points, so along with playing, she learns the spelling, but doesn't have chance to review the meaning of the word.
Overall, I think this software made learning fun.

5 out of 5 stars Takes the work out of homework.   October 14, 2007
A. Polk (Grants Pass, Oregon USA)
A useful tool to supplement your child's education and get them to do their spelling homework each week! Lots of games and fun, but when writing the words with the FlyPen you may need to find someone with good penmanship! (I guess that means it helps you with spelling AND penmanship!)

Great product, and we purchased ours from Amazon for less than 8 dollars! The timing was perfect: right before the school year started.

4 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT RESOURCE!!!!   September 24, 2007

I homeschool my children. Although I am very happy with the curriculum we are using, my son just struggled and struggled with spelling. Writing is already low on his want-to list so writing out his spelling list every week was like pulling teeth. We found ourselves both frustrated by the end of the week. He was failing almost every spelling test. I knew I had to get creative with our lessons. I found this Fly Pen Spelling program and at first I thought, "Well couldn't hurt. Why not give it a shot?" At this point I was at my wits end, as was my son. WHAT A FUN PRODUCT!!! He had a blast with the games and of course spending his fly bucks at the end was a huge hit. However, as the mom and teacher, my next question was, "Yeah it's fun but did it work?" HE PASSED EVERY TEST FROM THAT POINT ON TILL THE END OF THE YEAR!!!!! Worth the money? YES DEFINITELY YES!!! I think we could use more lists in the book though. One complaint...ONLY LASTS 5 WEEKS...There is only enough pages for FIVE lists...All the rest are games based on those five lists. We have a new list every week. I can't afford to buy a new book every 5 weeks. Here's a tip...DELETE THE WORDS FROM A LIST AND WRITE THE NEW LIST NEXT TO EACH DELETED WORD...That lasted a little while longer.

This is a GREAT educational tool for kids. I gave it to my 7 year old for Easter and he loves it! He played with it last night for almost 2 hours! The reccomened grades are 3-5 but he is in 1rst grade and it can be easily costomized to work with his spelling list! I had to beg him to stop playing so he could save some paper for next weeks spelling list! Way to go Leapfrog! You came up with another hit!!! I just hope they come out with even more Flyware games!!!!

My son was having a very hard time with spelling. We have tried everything to help him! I went online to see what I could find and found the Fly Through spelling product. I bought it for him and the first week he got a 92% on his spelling test! The next week a 98%! This week (drum roll please) he got a 101%!!!! He is so excited! We are too! I recommend it to anyone. I am going to get Fly though Math next. He has an A in math right now but he is starting to need a little extra practice and this is a fun way to do just that!
