3 out of 5 stars Great Software, Okay Journal   June 5, 2006

The Flyware: Fly Journal is an interractive journal that can be used with the Fly Pentop Computer. The package contains a 50-page journal (with lock and keys), a cartridge for the Fly pen, and a card with 'Category Cubes' that when tapped with the Fly pen give you things to write about. The journal also has a few other features, like a place you can tap to tell you how long you've been writing a code-maker so you can write things in code and use the Fly pen to decode them later.

I enjoy journal writing and my Fly pen so I thought I would give this a try. Overall, I am happy with the software but am disappointed in the quality of the journal itself. The Category Cubes actually offer some good suggestions of things to write, one of the better ones reciting a quote and asking a question in relation to it. The timing feature is nice, there's something really fun about your pen encouraging you. Younger girls will likely get more use out of the code-maker than I do, but it's something interesting to play with.

The journal, in my opinion, is cheap and awful. The cover is just cardboard covered in paper (which can even tear at the spine) and has glitter on it that flakes off, not durable at all. The metal hoops the lock fits through snapped off after barely being touched. The paper is nice and glossy but about 1/4 of each page is covered in decoration. On top of that, the paper isn't even interractive Fly paper! (Something I just don't understand at all.)

You can buy a much nicer journal for half the price of this set and I ended up cutting the Category Cubes card out of the journal and using a Fly notebook. I don't regret the purchase as I really enjoy the Fly Journal software, but for the price I was expecting a much nicer journal to come with it and definitely one filled with Fly paper.

I also agree with the other reviewer who complained about the sexism of the product. While some of the Category Cubes are fine they are geared soley towards girls and the journal itself is almost oppressively 'girly.' There are plenty of girls who would prefer something with less... pink, glitter, and glam. I would like to see LeapFrog release a more unisex Fly journal or a boy-themed one too.

My brother who likes to write and draw, found this on the Internet. He then got the journal for Christmas, but was very upset to find that the FLY Pentop Computer was not in the package and sold separately for $100 or around that price range. He likes it but was pretty upset when there was no FLY Pentop Computer. He now has the FLY Pentop Computer and enjoys his FLY gear very much. He even takes it to bed with him!

FLY Journal is not like any other Journal that you have ever owned. This Journal is so great, I want to write in it everyday because of the special features it has in it.

The FLY Journal has category cubes inside it to prevent anyone to not have writer's block. The category cubes are so simple. All you have to do is tap a certian cube, and it asks you something about THAT cube.

For example, let's say I tapped the, "Happy" cube. It will probably say, "Why are you so happy today?" that way you can actually write why you are!

You will never have to hide this Journal from anyone again, either. Why? Because it comes with a key and lock to stop anyone that's greedy and sneaky from getting into your Journal.

*NOTE* Please keep the key safe, and keep it away from people you do not want to see into your Journal.

The rest is just to write with your FLY pen (sold seperately).

This Journal is very cool, and it's my favorite journal. Even TEENS love it (I am one myself)

NOT a waste of money. AT ALL.

-Melissa
