Fun but some problems January 25, 2008 Yuki (Aurora, IL) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We got this for our 4-year old son for Christmas. After opening on 25th, we couldn't upload the updates on smart pen. We called Oregon Scientific and determined that it was defective and was told to contact the reseller, Toychute. They didn't have replacement and suggested us to send whole thing back for refund. Otherwise, we have to get the replacement from Oregon Scientific. Not wanting to take Christmas present from 4-year old, we contacted Oregon Scientific. In the meantime, it completely quit working by that weekend and had to wait on following week. There were some frustration of not getting further assistance from either Oregon Scientific or Toychute, we finally got hold of someone in corporate office at Oregon Scientific. We got replacement on January 22nd. It's working in normal play but still having problem on updating it because of code. We can't register with a new pen. We left a message to Oregon Scientific to their answering service (This is the only way to get the service) immeidately and not heard back yet.(it's Jan 24th today) We know it will work great and our son will enjoy greatly so we are patiently trying to resolve the issue. We are still hoping this will be resolved very soon. So, product seems great with its potential as long as it works but response time to resolve the issue is very poor with Oregon Scientific. Toychute doesn't seem to be helpful at any point of this problem so don't count on them.
Nice product when it works, but BEWARE of updates! January 19, 2008 D. Robert (Jackson, MI) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I purchased the SmartGlobe for my kids for Christmas after using the one my sister has. It worked fine the first few days but as soon as I registered the pen and tried to download new data it reformatted the pen and erased all data the pen had. Now every time I try to download info into the pen the system locks up. Customer service is non-existent. Phone calls & email requests have gone unanswered. Now I just have a globe with a pen that does nothing with noone to assist me. When it works, it does work well, however, DO NOT TRY TO UPDATE NEW INFORMATION INTO YOUR PEN because if you have a problem then you basically have an over priced globe.
fantastic learning tool June 16, 2007 Janice Savage (NJ) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
My son got this as a gift for finishing up first grade. This globe is a fantastic way to teach kids world facts. The only thing that isn't so great is that the software updates are PC format only. To update the software I have to go to a PC computer at work. We are completely Macintosh format in our house. Other than that its really cool.
Good globe, lousy company. April 8, 2007 Cano2 (Nowhere, Important) 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
This is a good globe, the kids found it pretty fun. Not earth shatteringly cool, just fun. I wouldn't pay the prices most places are selling this for, thankfully I found it for [...]at a Membership warehouse. Its worth that, but not worth anything more! The software, support, and website for this product are nothing short of USELESS. Updates are buggy and almost always crash or error out. Don't expect a response from the company, I tried 6 emails and all were ignored. Don't try calling them, their number is either busy, or they won't call you back. Overall, I am deducting 2 stars for the price and horrible company behind the product.
