3 out of 5 stars Islam may by the light for some, but not for me.   November 15, 2008
B. Buskirk (Rockport, WV USA)
I thought that the doll saying "Islam is the light was THE most ridiculous thing I'd heard all year, and remember this was during the campaigning for president. I finally picked up my 2 yr. old daughter's doll and half listened figuring that there'd be nothing there. Well, I was wrong. "Islam is the light" comes out clear as day. I had 11 other adults in my family listen and they could hear it clearly across a large room. My mother-in-law took it to work with her, and several high school teachers had no trouble hearing it as well. Now, do I believe that all of the Christian education my daughter has received at home and at church is going to be ruined because of this doll? No. Am I going to take it away from her because this doll clearly says "Islam is the light"? No, she loves it and I love watching her play mommy. But, what bothers me is the parent company Mattel responded to my complaint with "It doesn't have any programmed words except 'momma'. However there is one sound that might sound like bright, might, night, or something similar." I lose all respect for a company that doesn't take responsibility for mistakes in their products. If this doll was supposed to only say momma and it clearly says momma then later says "Islam is the light", then that clearly is a product flaw and they should take responsibility for it. Does any of this mean that I have a problem with any islamic religion? No, it's not my choice of religion, but I respect that it is for others. I am just disappointed in Mattel and the way they handled this matter. Snopes has helped me a lot when it comes to determining if something is genuine or not, but in this case, the proof is in the baby. Snopes may say that it is false and the doll doesn't say this, but my daughter's doll does, my niece's doll does, as do several of the dolls taped on youtube and the ones on the shelves at my local WalMart. (We stood in the aisle and tested them out...even the demo has it) By the way, the comment made earlier about the daughter asking about the direction to Mecca 5 times a day...hilarious! I got such a kick out of that!

3 out of 5 stars What's the big deal?   October 29, 2008

I heard all the controversy over this doll and how it says "Islam is the light" I went to the store and played with the doll and u can clearly hear that it says that, well as long as you are listening for it. I had played with these dolls with my daughter in the store before and NEVER noticed this. I think it's not really a big deal and wasn't done on purpose. A little kid would NEVER notice this so no biggie!!!

5 out of 5 stars Still a sweet baby doll!   October 18, 2008

I just got one of these for my daughter's 2nd birthday and we saw the whole thing on the news. I listened to it and frankly I don't see the big deal. I don't think my 2 yr. old will go on a terrist rant when she grows up from being a mommy to her cute little doll! She just loves that it talks and coos and moves like a baby. She doesn't know what that phrase means. We as parents are the ones responsible for our children's actions and how they grow up, not a doll! We instill their values and teach them lessons, not dolls. Dolls are fun. My son and daughter fight over her doll, so now I have purchased one for him!!

4 out of 5 stars I love this doll   October 16, 2008

I bought this doll for my young daughter before all the hoopla started, and I am amused by people who believe they hear the doll saying something like "terrorism is good" or whatever their fevered minds are creating. This doll is in my house and I can say for sure that there is nothing like "Obama is dangerous," "McCain is senile" or any of the oddball phrases people are saying they hear. The doll speaks babytalk, and other than my daughter asking for the direction of Mecca so she can kneel correctly when she says her prayers (five times a day--what a good girl!), I can say there's nothing unusual with this doll or my daughter's attachment to it.

My husband is overseas protecting our freedom and for fisher price to not take all these dolls off the shelves is down right insulting. This doll clearly says Islam is the light. DO NOT BUY
